This need to look popular on social media has reached silly proportions with many failing to understand that anyone with half a brain can tell when someone has paid for “followers” on twitter, paid for “likes” on Facebook and paid for “views” on YouTube.
Sadly, to add to the fake lives and profiles, what we now have are fake numbers and with social media being manipulated by the equivalent of those Nigerian scammers writing about how you have won gazillions in a lottery or inherited more gazillions from some “family member” who has just popped up- or, popped off.
In social media, there are those- usually from the sub-continent where clicks are a dime a dozen- offering you greater of everything- more views, more “likes” and better rankings on Google Search through SEOs- Search Engine Operatives.
Do I trust “social media experts”? As much as I trust the abilities of “entertainment lawyers.”
Both are flim-flam people who operate through buzz words and over-complicating what are the basics of good old-fashioned marketing and offering such “advice” as adding hashtags, key words and, just to complicate things even more, throwing in the kitchen sink as, like their “relatives” in entertainment law, they are absolutely clueless about what works and doesn’t work in the online world where Facebook, especially, YouTube and even twitter and now, Tinder, operate as a law unto themselves.
YouTube has suddenly become the most difficult to understand and who can remove videos with no reasons given while allowing the far greater enemy of artists- copyright infringement- to carry on regardless while policing whatever makes sense only to this social media platform.
As I have said many times, if for just one day, the world can go on strike and refuse to give our content to these mediums, perhaps then, everything can be thought through better and with a more level playground put in place where mediums like, especially, YouTube and Facebook get the message- loud and clear:
We, the content providers, control our own destiny and, by owning this content, in many ways, controlling the very mediums that insult our intelligence through intimidation tactics, by holding us ransom and treating us as if we’re they’re bitches.
The tail has wagged the dog for way too long- and it’s time the dog bit back. Hard.
