When one sees and hears what’s going on with Rupert Murdoch and his crumbling empire, much comes to mind. Like his crouching tigress of a wife, Wendi Deng aka “Smackdown Sister”.
I first met Wendi Deng when she was a very ambitious young girl working at STAR TV looking to go far. And she has. She snagged the Golden Goose that was The Old Fox- and has stuck by him. We all need a Wendi Deng in our corner. The woman has such big balls, one can hear them clang when she walks.
This reminds me how Rupert Murdoch coming own this satellite television station is one of the only times- except for now- that a little runt at that time- some might say he still is- named Richard Li actually “took” the old fox to the cleaners and sold him that empty “wok in the sky”.
A group of us worked for ages to make this “satellite station” look good and as if it had some business through “persuading” advertisers to produce and air commercials.
The team was a very strange group of executives and confidantes whom Little Richard made his Inner Circle- the ex-Hill and Knowlton PR guy Arnie Tucker, the VERY strange but creative in a dodgy way Michael Johnston, the ubiquitous George Chan, the totally useless Alex Zilo, the ad agency I worked for- DDBN- and run at that time by the oily Geoff Brown etc.
The stories as to what happened to some of these characters makes “Usual Suspects” look tame.
Was Michael Johnson, pictured below, centre, really Kaiser Soze?
Was he as brilliant as people thought him to be or was he an opportunist or complete con man?
Together, this group and Little Richard somehow managed to sucker-punch Rupert Murdoch into thinking that STAR TV was doing a BOOMING business and its BBC Channel was going to be his “gateway into China”.
Alas, China, banned the BBC Channel, but not before the old fox had paid an approximate US$587 million for this “wok in the sky”- and which was nowhere nearly worth this kinda money.
Look at Rupert Murdoch today and one MUST have to wonder if he is King Midas In Reverse and if, like the pariah that was The News Of The World, the Right-wing- based and biased Fox News will “yield” some similar strange new “stories” and just how much his Fox Channel- the home of “Glee”, “American Idol” and the upcoming launch of Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” will be ruined through association as far as advertisers and the public are concerned.
Perhaps all will be fine, but there is a very strong similarity between Rupert Murdoch and Simon Cowell other than them being cahoots in business: Their best days are behind them and the more they talk, the more they take a shovel and dig a deeper hole for themselves.
I don’t profess to be a fortune teller, but my bet is that Simon Cowell will go the way of Rupert Murdoch and the lawsuit slapped on Fox Broadcasting last night by Simon Fuller spells AT LEAST a PR disaster for the channel.
Murdoch and his parent company- News Corp- would have needed this like a hole in the head and the timing- it’s ALWAYS about timing- by Fuller has been interesting to say the least. And good for him.
It’s brought the spotlight into Murdoch’s companies and their strange business ways in the US. Already, Fox News is unrecognizable: Gone is the mighty Right Wing bias.
As for Simon Cowell, despite him recently throwing stones at the home which built him into the caricature he has become- the “Idol” franchise- he is still playing the very worn-out role of “Mr Nasty.” Sorry, mate, but “Mr Nasty” left the building with Sarah Palin and it doesn’t matter WHO you drag onto your show. Your one-trick pony routine has run its course.

Paula Abdul has had TWO television shows, both have flopped now she’s gone running back to try and replicate the role she played around 6-7 years ago.
Again, bad timing just as it’s been bad timing to bring music executive L.A Reid on board “The X Factor” right after “Idol” having music executive Jimmy Iovine on ITS show.

It’s ALWAYS all about timing and who really CARES about any of these television talent shows or its contestants and winners in the long run?

I was speaking to a mate today who knows his facts and figures and about how some are making a very big deal of Gold Typhoon losing Taiwanese artist Show Luo, a tepid Taiwanese version of Usher.
As he explained, ANY label that signs Show without having Management Rights will lose MILLIONS.
IF a label signs him up, it’s for “face” and, probably, part of a money laundering racket.
As for Gold Typhoon- a music/entertainment company with dire personnel problems and a tsunami of resignations – it should be glad to cut its losses and get rid of this guy.
If they have no management Rights, where’s the beef and where’s the money?
Here is where it’s going horribly tits up: Artists are becoming legends in their own lunch time way too quickly, way too much money is being paid for mediocre talent because of the fawning of sycophants.
It’s like my recent non-meeting with drummer- and possibly singer- Jun “You don’t know me?” Kung.
To many- in Hong Kong and parts of China who are “in the business”- he can walk on water.
This is easy when REAL talent is hard to find.
To me, Jun The Kung is drowning in his own ego- a nobody whose music is hardly impressive.
HIS time was twenty years ago when signed to a label called Cinepoly.
Rapper MC Jin is someone else suffering from bad timing.
When I first heard and met this guy and his “posse” made up of his bros, I was with EMI and he was a hard-assed Rapper signed to Virgin USA.
He flopped over there- who in the States is gonna buy into a CHINESE rapper unless it was the great Bruce Lee?- and is now in Hong Kong producing milk toast recordings and appearing in videos with Hong Kong’s much loathed Chief Executive Donald Tsang.
Whoever is managing MC Jin is mis-managing an artist with SOME talent, but even this is slipping away.
As for starting up a “music company”- especially in China- this is like throwing good money after bad as there is no Baidu light at the end o the tunnel. Why, you ask? And, again, I say, there is NO money in China or Greater China or India for a MUSIC company.
There ARE other revenue generators but it’s not going to come from signing up artists for their MUSIC alone and any new artist thinking of getting a recording deal in this region, forget it: The music companies have NO MONEY.
Repeat that line a thousand times: MUSIC COMPANIES HAVE NO MONEY whereas this so-called “digital world” has even less to offer- if that’s possible.
It’s all a con where music companies want everything for nothing while other new “start-ups” need content and then ask that they be PAID for “hosting” this content.

Meanwhile, as the Sun sinks very rapidly on Rupert Murdoch, his weedy son, James and, very likely, News Corp, in the small pool that is Hong Kong where big fish talk big and think they “hang” with International names, we have seen two of the cities biggest- and only- terrestrial television channels –ATV and HK-TVB- bite the dust.
One- ATV- jumped the gun and announced the “death” of former China president Jiang Zemin whereas the once-mighty TVB is having its former General Manager and “Personal Assistant”- and there’s a story straight outta the closet there- AND its Sales Manager hauled in on graft charges- and with millions having allegedly been pocketed for years. And no one high up knew?????
It makes a mockery, not only of the station, but all those artists it got behind and turned into “Canto-Pop idols” through dubious “awards” shows.
It’s kinda like the entertainment version of “hacking” into phones: Illegal and vile.
So, if the world can now go after the once-invincible Rupert Murdoch, who’s next?
There is a line of them and there WILL be a domino effect- finally.
In Australia, for example, it was announced today that the government will be looking at the online world following the suicide of a young girl due to bullying on Facebook.
People WILL start to question giving THEIR content- FOR FREE- to otherwise empty spaces like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter.
How do WE- the public- make ANY money outta any of the above?
As vanity showcases to show your “status”? Sure, they work for that.
But, it IS work- and YOUR work- uploading all that shit up there- and done for free.
As for the music and entertainment world, it’s full of tossers- those who talk the talk and stumble at every turn when they try to walk the walk.
The reason? It’s all bullshit- the words, the promises, the deals, the supposed connections.
Sure, I have worked with some and have had to listen about their “greatness”.
Others, I have promoted as “important” people to know.
Now, possibly a little bit more smarter, it’s not difficult to see that these people are out there just duping those who fall for all the name-droppings- worse than bird-droppings- and, simply put, waste everyone’s time as it’s all pie-in-the sky stuff and which they cannot deliver.
Their time, too, is up. One can only fool some of the people only some of the time before everyone wises up and says, “But what has he ever DONE?”
For them, for those trying to make a quick buck with illogical “deals”, The Fat Lady has not only sung, she’s still singing.
And it could finally be a tune that brings about a level playing field.
